Events examining peace, redlining and healthy eating happening this week in Dayton area
We’re back with another weekly dose of events and stories. Keep reading to see what’s happening in the Dayton area.

International Day of Peace Event at Courthouse Square — In celebration of the 40th International Day of Peace, the Peace Museum is sponsoring an event on Sept. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. The Peace Museum will unveil its new Peace Education Initiative to connect with local students.
The Art of Leverage: How to Use Debt to Create Cash Flow and Increase Profits — This virtual seminar on Sept. 23 from 2-4 p.m. is going to teach attendees how to use other people’s money to purchase assets that are going to make money. The seminar will also share stories about local entrepreneurs who used these methods to grow their small business into job-creating and income-producing juggernauts. Generation Dayton: Undesign the Redline — Join Generation Dayton for a guided tour of Dayton Metro Library's Undesign the Redline exhibit on Sept. 23 from 4-7 p.m. The exhibit demonstrates how structural racism designed the cities we live in today and the group will discuss opportunities for creating a more equitable future. "Beyond the Plate" by Decoded — Decoded will be giving a monthly cooking class at the Gem City Market on Sept. 24 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. that teaches culinary skills while discussing various mental health topics. Keith Leak & New Mercies Performing at Levitt Pavilion Dayton — This performance on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. features Keith Leak who is a songwriter, keyboardist, teacher, singer, orchestrator and studio engineer.
Phi Beta Sigma Ohio State Meeting — Dayton’s Beta Xi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is is hosting chapters from across the state at Grace United Methodist Church on Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hot breakfast and lunch will be provided. RSVP: bit.ly/PBSOH21
Dayton Fair Housing Symposium — The Dayton Human Relations Council will host the inaugural Dayton Fair Housing Symposium, bringing together experts from across the region to discuss eviction, Black homeownership initiatives, redlining, and discrimination trends. The event will be held on Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dayton Metro Library. Admission is free and HRC asks attendees to register in advance at daytonohio.gov/housingsymposium.
Dayton Salsa Project Performing at Levitt Pavilion Dayton — This performance on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. features Dayton Salsa Project, which is a partnership of local musicians and salsa music enthusiasts. The group came together as a result of the vibrant, growing Hispanic population of Dayton and the great interest of Daytonians in salsa music and dance.
Elevate Dayton’s calendar has more upcoming events including Nutrition for Health with Kettering Health Community Outreach and a preview of Matt Maher performing at Levitt Pavilion Dayton.

Dayton area leaders reflect on Juneteenth and equity for the Black community moving forward — Community leaders in the Dayton area are reflecting on how they celebrated Juneteenth and how they're working to ensure equity for the Black community moving forward. "We just have to make sure that this is the beginning of us traveling toward true equity and equality for all people,” said Montgomery County Recorder Brandon McClain. “But this isn't the be all, end all. It's a good start.”
A look at food insecurity in the Dayton area and what local organizations say is the problem — The effects of food insecurity are impacting the Dayton region on a geographic, social and economic level. Let’s take a look at some of the local nonprofits fighting hunger and the underlying problems affecting residents today. This article is Elevate Dayton’s first look at providing some background about food insecurity in the Dayton area. In the coming weeks, we’ll look at other factors responsible for food insecurity and what communities and other organizations are doing about it.

The writer will be expected to write one or two, 250-400 word articles a week about Dayton’s unheard stories. This is a remote position, but the candidate needs to be based in the Dayton area.
