Film festivals and theatre performances take center stage in Dayton area this week

October has lots of great events in store for the Dayton area. Let’s take a look at some of the events during the beginning of the month.

Upcoming events:

  • Uh-oh!: Combatting the Risk of Departing Employees — Join the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce at the Dayton Arcade on Oct. 6 from 3:30-6 p.m. for a networking happy hour followed by a presentation by Faruki+ attorneys on what you can do to combat the risks of departing employees. The attorneys at Faruki+ have many years of experience litigating employment cases and this is your opportunity to hear the advice that they give their clients, for free.

  • Justice on Tap — This fundraising social on Oct. 6 from 5-9 p.m. at the Dublin Pub benefits Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. (LAWO) and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project (GDVLP).

  • GigMerge Virtual Music Industry Networking Night — Join GigMerge for their Virtual Music Industry Networking Night on Oct. 7 from 6-8 p.m. It will feature social networking and a chance to visit expo booths to learn about the event’s sponsors.

  • Dayton LGBT Film Festival — The Dayton LGBT Film Festival is back for its 16th year at The Neon from Oct. 8-14. Every film will screen two times over the course of an entire week and scholarship opportunities are available. Special guests won’t attend in person this year and organizers hope to add virtual Q&As whenever possible.

  • "Women in Jeopardy!" by Wendy MacLeod — The first weekend of this production premieres from Oct. 8-10 at the Dayton Theatre Guild. Synopsis: Divorcées Mary and Jo are suspicious of their friend Liz’s new boyfriend, who is just plain creepy. He’s a dentist with a copy of Silence of the Lambs in his waiting room and an antique dentistry collection in his basement — and worse, he may be a serial killer! His missing hygienist was just found dead, apparently murdered by a dental instrument. Trading their wine glasses for spy glasses, the ladies try to discover the truth and save their friend before it’s too late.

  • Tour de Gem — This fundraising cycling event on Oct. 10 starting at 7:45 a.m. at RiverScape MetroPark is for local nonprofits to raise money and bring awareness to their important missions. This is a fun, family-friendly way for cyclists of all ages and abilities to have a positive impact in their community and explore the many gems Dayton has to offer.

  • Flyer Pitch Competition — The Flyer Pitch Competition awards $150,000 annually in cash and prizes. Apply for the Startup Venture Track or the Greater West Dayton Social Venture Track by Oct. 15.
