Local artists reflect on new murals in Dayton area

By Chanda Hunter

Six new murals at the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services Northview Center are now complete and the artists behind the work are reflecting on the project.

The murals are a joint project between I Am Boundless, a West Carrollton-based service provider to people with developmental disabilities, and the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD). This project was made possible by a grant from Culture Works and MCBDD.

For the past year, five artists participating in the Spire Arts vocational program at Boundless have been working on the project with guidance from an artist in residence. The Spire artists are Carlton Canady, Kent Cruea, Kaitlyn Daugherty, Tyler Garrett and Alicia Vencill.

Hailey Fulford, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s nationally recognized Design Architecture Art and Planning program, served as the artist in residence by providing project coordination and guidance to the artists and the participating agencies.

Completing the project was an enjoyable time for all parties involved.

“I had fun with the paint splatter on the wall,” said Vencill. ”I got so aggressive with the paint and it was so much fun to do it.”

“I really hope that they see these artists as incredibly capable and talented people,” said Fulford. “And I really hope that the focus isn't on their disabilities, but instead on their abilities because they are incredibly able and they're incredibly talented, skilled artists.”
