A local fraternity in the Dayton area is giving back to the community during their upcoming day of service. The brothers of the Beta Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma are having their annual Sigma Day of Service this Saturday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.

The agenda includes a Santa Clara clean-up, brotherhood lunch and mobile foodbank. Participants can RSVP at bit.ly/dytdayofservice. The chapter has a goal of having 40 brothers giving back to the local community that day.

Chapter president Justen Seay sees the day of service as another way for the brothers to live out the fraternity’s motto of “culture for service and service for humanity.”

“I want our brothers to continue to be an influence on our community through service and work toward shifting the culture of our community, helping to ensure to improve the lives of the citizens of Dayton,” he said.

Last year, Beta Xi Sigma worked to help the Artemis Center prepare to reopen for its clients by helping clean and disinfect the facility. They also donated $300 and more than $1,000 worth of food supplies to the center. The chapter has helped other community organizations like St. Vincent de Paul and local churches in previous years.

Next up for Beta Xi Sigma is their Adopt-a-School initiative that benefits Emerson Academy. This effort includes a Trunk-or-Treat event during Halloween and a Thanksgiving basket giveaway. Another annual event is a fundraiser for The Dayton Foodbank around Christmas.
