Steve Biko was a South African anti-apartheid activist whose charisma and writing abilities brought him to the forefront of his country's quest for freedom in the 1970s. As the father of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa, his strident words ignited a generation that yearned to be free from the internal and external shackles that denied them the basic tenants of what they needed to be human.
