Vann Newkirk appointed as 23rd president of Wilberforce University

By Zack Frink

Vann Newkirk, a seasoned academic leader, has been chosen as the new president of Wilberforce University aiming to boost fundraising and improve academic offerings, reports the Dayton Business Journal.

The big picture: A graduate of an HBCU himself, Newkirk has held multiple leadership positions at institutions such as Fisk University and Alabama A&M University.

  • As a historian, he has written about African American history in Alabama and the obstacles HBCUs face.

Looking ahead: Newkirk is set to assume his new position in July, taking over from retiring President Elfred Pinkard.

  • His primary objective will be to involve community supporters in fundraising initiatives to bolster academic programs and elevate Wilberforce University's national standing among liberal arts colleges.

The bottom line: Newkirk's experience and dedication to HBCUs indicate a bright future for Wilberforce University as it strives to preserve its tradition of excellence and foster transformational impact on the lives of its students.
