Introducing Humans of the Arcade

Introducing the “Humans of the Arcade” series. This series is a collection of portraits and interviews developed to highlight the people associated with the Dayton Arcade project. “Humans of the Arcade” was designed by lead developer Cross Street Partners to give a glimpse into the personal lives of the people who are making the Arcade’s restoration come to life. The first installment of the series features Dorian A. Harris and how he stepped out of his comfort zone to find happiness.

“I actually kind of enjoy what I'm doing in the sense that, you know, when you work for an elected official or you're a professional, you have certain responsibilities and anxieties that come along with it. Here, nobody's in my way. I can put my music on and just focus or think about my law classes or the family. Recently, my mother succumbed to a battle with breast cancer. I was taking her to treatments one day a week in Columbus; so, it was a lot on my plate. This opportunity afforded me the flexibility to do what was of value and importance to me, whether it be the education, my family, and being able to contribute to the work environment.

I had the courage to step out of my comfort zone to get to where I really want to be and to find happiness. It just didn't plan out the way I thought and I ended up becoming a custodian. I've never been happier. You know, it gets cold in the winter. So I grabbed that mop, you know what I mean? And my logic was, if I'm doing what I'm supposed to do spiritually, taking necessary steps to develop myself, helping people, and doing what individuals should do, then through that journey I'll meet the people and the networks I need. Even though I know I could probably put my tie on and find some job opportunities, I tell myself ‘Be still, do what you're doing, finish law school, stay focused, and those opportunities will present themselves.’”
